Articulated Laurie

laurie

I met the renowned journalist and broadcaster, PROFESSOR LAURIE TAYLOR, at a hugely entertaining talk he gave on a tour of universities. I showed him some material I had written in the style of his very humorous column in the Times Higher Education Supplement and later sent him some of my verses, mentioning the imminent launch of The Poem Shop. He wrote back saying, “Thanks for your letter and the very amusing enclosures (I particularly liked your leaving poem!). I wish you every success with your new venture. You obviously have a talent for writing verse.”

Here is an extract from that leaving poem,

EMBRACING THE CHANGE AGENDA

……For hours on end I’ve sat
and taken notes at many a meeting
but life’s too short to spend this way -
its joys are all too fleeting.

So carpe diem’s what I say -
enough exquisite prose
I’ve wasted on such trivia
as a loo leak in Melrose,
on trailing wires in offices,
on grease traps in the kitchen -
to do something more creative now
for some time I’ve been itchin’.
The die is cast, I’ve made my choice,
I’ve reached the end of the line.
These verses are to give you
one month’s notice – I resign.
